Preliminary  Task

While recording the pre-lim task we had to stick to 3 important rules that we had to include in our recording.

Match on action - Film editing where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. We used an example of the character walking from one scene to another by walking through the door.

Shot reverse shot - This is a technique where where one character is shown looking at another character (often having a conversation), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

180 degree rule - Two characters should always have the same left and right relationship to each other. This means the line of action may never be crossed.

In the prelim task I learnt how to work co-operatively when given a task in a short time period. This meant that I had to choose a group quickly and distingish the key roles for each person and aline tasks. As a group we managed to overcome obstacles such as, having problems with the cameras, having noisy locations this set us back 45minutes. So this meant we had to improve and think productively and manage our time well.

When producing our prelim task, we didn't follow a script, so we had to do more re-takes than planned nor did we have a location to film which, overalll wasted most of our time. Also trying to keep continuity throughout was harder than we thought, making sure the mis-en-scene stayed the same in every shot. Eventhough, we never used a tripod, we still learnt how to build and emsemble it and we now have an idea on how it works.

Overall, I learnt that planning and structure is key, it keeps you on task and guides you through tasks. As well as setting each team member a task, to avoid any social loafing.

From the preliminary task, I have learnt by having too much focus on the 'plot' it can affect the performance of the whole preliminary task. The planning of the preliminary task was too focused on what we was going to say/do rather than the effectiveness of our camera shots. If we spent more time focusing on our camera angles and shots rather than the performance, our prelim would have been much better. From this, I have learnt that if we want a good performance, planning and structure is key. I also learnt that I need to be more focused on the actual task which was to perform a match on action shot, shot reverse shot and 180 degree rule, rather than the performance of our acting. Having too much focus on our acting abilities and the script was overall a waste of our time and we could of used the time more productively. It also didn't help that we had to keep changing locations as there was too much of a noisy background, and therefore this set us back at least by 45 minutes, so our time management could also have been improved.  I also learnt that it is hard to create a short recording as our group had to take numerous shots to create a smooth prelimlinary task. I've also learnt it is better to use a professional camera rather than an iPhone camera, however at the time the professional cameras had been booked out and the only one left was not charged. Overall, I think our preliminary task was decent as we completed the task set. However, we didn't complete the task to the best of our ability and we could of improved on that.

From the pre-lim task Ive learnt that its not as easy as it looks to create a short recording. As a group we had to take numeruous amounts of takes to establish a smooth and clear result e.g the match on action. This resulted us to have less time and encouraged us to work quicker together. When producing the pre-lim task we had issues with the camera which resulted some of the recordings to be portrait and landscape. Also we had spent too much time on the performance rather than the camera angles and the 3 rules which we could have improved. The editing encouraged us to learn the basic such as erasing errors, shortening the clips and merging some clips together. Overall i think our completed pre-lim task became better once edited but could have been improved.
